A drive-thru COVID-19 vaccination event in Azalea Park aimed to increase access, by changing the method to register for an appointment. State Representative Carlos Guillermo Smith and Padre Jose Rodriguez hosted the event at Iglesia Episcopal Jesus de Nazaret Church on Willow Drive. “The Black and Brown population in Florida represents 40% of the residents in Florida,” Smith said, “and yet those two populations only represent 13% of total vaccinations.
The site offered five hundred doses of the Moderna vaccine to senior citizens. “We went to where people are in the Hispanic community and had them have the option to sign up,” said U.S. Representative Darren Soto. Bearing in mind that internet access posed a barrier to getting an appointment, registration for the event was held in-person, at supermarkets near Semoran Boulevard.
